Nokia Siemens Networks' IPTV Platform Enables Daktel to Offer Interactive TV Widgets, OTT Video

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) said Monday that Daktel Communications, a subsidiary of Dakota Central Telecommunications Cooperative, a telco that serves central North Dakota, has deployed its IPTV platform, enabling it to offer a range of advanced services, including DVR, VOD and interactive TV. According to the company, Daktel is one of the first operators in the US to deploy the platform. "Today's subscribers require higher-quality television experiences and content that is for their individual interests," Daktel CEO, Keith Larson, said in a prepared statement. "With its support for high-quality video services and an open environment for application development, Nokia Siemens Networks' platform allows us to satisfy our customers' needs for digital entertainment."

According to NSN, its IPTV platform will enable Daktel to offer its subscribers interactive TV widgets (including widgets for social networking, sports scores, localized weather, and more), OTT video and other Internet content, and interactive advertising. The platform will support a range of third-party applications, the company says.

NSN says that the latest version of its IPTV platform includes an enhanced version of its interactive applications toolkit based on Interactive Markup Language (IML). The company claims that the open platform facilitates faster development of applications around the TV stream and greater flexibility in user interface customization. This, it says, leads the way to an open environment for applications in the media market, "freeing operators to partner with developers and create competitive advantages quickly, without being bound to any one vendor's roadmaps."
