YouTube Increases Maximum Size of Uploads from 1GB to 2GB

--Also Makes it Easier to Share and Embed HD Videos

In a posting on its corporate blog, Wednesday, YouTube announced that it is increasing the maximum size of standard video uploads on its service from 1GB to 2GB, allowing users to upload longer videos at higher resolution, as well as large HD files directly from their cameras. In addition, the company announced new features that allow users to share links directly to the HD version of their video and to embed the HD version on their blog or Web site.

According to the company, in order to share a link to the HD version of a video, users must simply add "&hd=1" to the end of the URL; the video will then start playing in HD by default as soon as someone follows the link, the company says. In order to embed the HD version of a video on a Web site or blog, meanwhile, users must first click the "customize" button to the right of the embed box on the video page, and then click on the "play in HD" option. The embed code that is generated will cause the video to start playing in HD as soon as a viewer clicks "play," the company says.
